Supreme Court Judges Salaries

The impact of the High Court and Supreme Court Judges (Salaries and Conditions of Service) Amendment Act, 2018 is that the Supreme Court and high court judges have got nearly 200% increase in salaries.

The Chief Justice of India will get a monthly salary of Rs2.80 lakh. His earlier salary was only Rs 1 lakh.

Supreme Court judges and Chief Justices of High Courts will receive a monthly salary of Rs 2.50 lakh.

Their earlier salary was only Rs 90,000 per month.

High Court will receive a salary of Rs 2.25 lakh per month as against their earlier salary of Rs 80,000 per month now.

The increase in Supreme Court Judges Salaries happened because of the representation made by then Chief Justice of India T.S. Thakur in 2016.

It was pointed out that the low salaries were a deterrent to competent professionals joining the Bench.

It was also pointed out that the result of the low salaries was that as against the approved strength of 31, the Supreme Court has only 25 judges.

As regards the 24 high courts in the Country, the approved strength is 1,079. However, only 682 judges are presently in office.

This is having an impact on the disposal of cases and passing of judgements.
